What is a Baseball IQ test?

A baseball IQ test measures how well you read the game beyond bat speed or arm strength — the situational reads and rule knowledge that separate a player who understands baseball from one who's just reacting to the pitch. SpoVote's free Baseball IQ Test — we call it Diamond IQ — is a 10-question multiple-choice quiz built around situations that come up under MLB rules: when the infield fly rule actually applies, how a defense should set up its cutoff and relay on a ball hit into the gap, why a manager calls for a hit-and-run in a particular count, and how a baserunner should read a fly ball off the bat. It's not a trivia quiz about stats or history — every question probes baseball IQ the way a manager would: situational awareness, positioning, and the reasoning behind the call.

Scoring is difficulty-weighted, not a simple percent-correct. Each question is tagged easy, medium, or hard, and harder questions are worth more toward your final 0–100 score — so getting the trickier baserunning and defensive-positioning questions right moves the needle further than the basic ones. Your score maps to one of five tiers, from Rookie up through Role Player, Starter, All-Star, and Hall of Fame — the same shorthand players use to talk about where someone fits on a roster. Every attempt draws a fresh, stratified mix of easy, medium, and hard questions from SpoVote's baseball question bank, so retaking the test isn't just re-answering the same ten prompts.

The questions span four core skill areas managers actually look for: pitch sequencing, situational hitting, cutoff and relay reads, and baserunning instincts. A sample question from the bank: "Runners on first and second, one out, and the batter lifts a routine pop-up the shortstop could catch with ordinary effort in fair territory — what's the correct call?" The right answer is the infield fly rule: the batter is automatically out whether or not the ball is actually caught, and the runners may advance at their own risk but aren't forced to. The rule exists specifically so the defense can't let the ball drop on purpose to turn an easy double play. That's the kind of rule-and-situation read this test is built to score.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real IQ test?+

No — despite the name, this isn't a clinical or standardized intelligence test like one administered by a psychologist. "Diamond IQ" is sports shorthand for baseball game awareness, decision-making, and rules and strategy knowledge. Think of it as a baseball knowledge and instincts quiz, not a measure of general intelligence — just for fun, with no diagnostic value.

How is the score calculated?+

Each of the 10 questions is weighted by difficulty — easy counts for 1 point, medium for 2, and hard for 3 — toward the maximum possible weighted score. Your result is your weighted-correct total divided by that maximum, rounded to a 0–100 scale, which then places you in a tier from Rookie to Hall of Fame.

What does the test cover?+

Ten multiple-choice questions on MLB rules, strategy, and situational awareness — the infield fly rule, cutoff and relay reads, and baserunning instincts. It's not stats trivia or player history.

Can I retake it?+

Yes — every attempt draws a fresh, stratified mix of easy, medium, and hard questions from the full baseball question bank, so retaking it isn't just answering the same 10 prompts again.

Do I need to sign up?+
