What is a Tennis IQ test?

A tennis IQ test measures how well you read a match beyond raw power off the ground — the shot selection, court craft, and rules knowledge that separate a player who understands tennis from one who's just hitting the ball back. SpoVote's free Tennis IQ Test — we call it Baseline IQ — is a 10-question multiple-choice quiz built around situations that come up under ITF rules: how a standard tiebreak's serve rotation actually works, when to follow an approach shot to net, how to construct a point against a pusher versus a big hitter, and how the scoring format should shape strategy on the biggest points. It's not a trivia quiz about tournaments or rankings — every question probes tennis IQ the way a coach would: shot selection, court positioning, and the reasoning behind the call.

Scoring is difficulty-weighted, not a simple percent-correct. Each question is tagged easy, medium, or hard, and harder questions are worth more toward your final 0–100 score — so getting the trickier point-construction and format questions right moves the needle further than the basic ones. Your score maps to one of five tiers, from Rookie up through Role Player, Starter, All-Star, and Hall of Fame — the same shorthand players use to talk about where their game is at. Every attempt draws a fresh, stratified mix of easy, medium, and hard questions from SpoVote's tennis question bank, so retaking the test isn't just re-answering the same ten prompts.

The questions span four core skill areas coaches actually look for: shot selection, court positioning, point construction, and match-tempo management. A sample question from the bank: "In a standard first-to-seven tiebreak, who serves the first point, and how does the serve rotate after that?" The right answer is that whichever player's turn it is to serve next in the normal game rotation serves just that first point, and from there the serve alternates every two points, with players switching ends every six. Get that rotation wrong and you can cost your side a service point's worth of rhythm at the exact moment the set is on the line. That's the kind of format-and-rules read this test is built to score.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real IQ test?+

No — despite the name, this isn't a clinical or standardized intelligence test like one administered by a psychologist. "Baseline IQ" is sports shorthand for tennis game awareness, decision-making, and rules and strategy knowledge. Think of it as a tennis knowledge and instincts quiz, not a measure of general intelligence — just for fun, with no diagnostic value.

How is the score calculated?+

Each of the 10 questions is weighted by difficulty — easy counts for 1 point, medium for 2, and hard for 3 — toward the maximum possible weighted score. Your result is your weighted-correct total divided by that maximum, rounded to a 0–100 scale, which then places you in a tier from Rookie to Hall of Fame.

What does the test cover?+

Ten multiple-choice questions on ITF rules, strategy, and situational awareness — tiebreak procedure, point construction, and match-tempo management. It's not stats trivia or tournament history.

Can I retake it?+

Yes — every attempt draws a fresh, stratified mix of easy, medium, and hard questions from the full tennis question bank, so retaking it isn't just answering the same 10 prompts again.

Do I need to sign up?+

No sign-up required. Answer the questions and get your score and tier instantly.
