What is a Football IQ test?

A football IQ test measures how well you read the game beyond arm strength or straight-line speed — the pre-snap reads and split-second decisions that separate a player who understands football from one who's just following the play call. SpoVote's free Football IQ Test — we call it Gridiron IQ — is a 10-question multiple-choice quiz built around situations that come up under real NFL rules: when to burn a timeout to protect the clock, how a defense should adjust its coverage against a trips formation, why a two-minute drill lives or dies on the sideline, and how down-and-distance should shape the next play call. It's not a trivia quiz about stats or draft history — every question probes football IQ the way a coach would: pre-snap recognition, situational awareness, and the reasoning behind the call.

Scoring is difficulty-weighted, not a simple percent-correct. Each question is tagged easy, medium, or hard, and harder questions are worth more toward your final 0–100 score — so nailing the trickier clock-management and coverage-recognition questions moves the needle further than the basic ones. Your score maps to one of five tiers, from Rookie up through Role Player, Starter, All-Star, and Hall of Fame — the same shorthand players and coaches use to describe where someone sits on a depth chart. Every attempt draws a fresh, stratified mix of easy, medium, and hard questions from SpoVote's football question bank, so retaking the test isn't just re-answering the same ten prompts.

The questions span four core skill areas coaches actually look for: play recognition, route concepts, gap discipline, and clock and situational management. A sample question from the bank: "Trailing by one point, you score a go-ahead touchdown with 3 seconds left in the fourth quarter — do you kick the extra point or go for two?" The right answer is to kick the extra point: with only enough time left for a kickoff return, the opponent has no realistic path to another meaningful possession, so the higher-percentage PAT that locks in the lead is the correct call — going for two only makes sense when the score situation specifically requires those extra points, which it doesn't here. That's the kind of situational read this test is built to score.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a real IQ test?+

No — despite the name, this isn't a clinical or standardized intelligence test like one administered by a psychologist. "Gridiron IQ" is sports shorthand for football game awareness, decision-making, and rules and strategy knowledge. Think of it as a football knowledge and instincts quiz, not a measure of general intelligence — just for fun, with no diagnostic value.

How is the score calculated?+

Each of the 10 questions is weighted by difficulty — easy counts for 1 point, medium for 2, and hard for 3 — toward the maximum possible weighted score. Your result is your weighted-correct total divided by that maximum, rounded to a 0–100 scale, which then places you in a tier from Rookie to Hall of Fame.

What does the test cover?+

Ten multiple-choice questions on NFL rules, strategy, and situational awareness — play recognition, coverage matchups, and clock management in the two-minute drill. It's not stats trivia or draft history.

Can I retake it?+

Yes — every attempt draws a fresh, stratified mix of easy, medium, and hard questions from the full football question bank, so retaking it isn't just answering the same 10 prompts again.

Do I need to sign up?+
